Throughout their careers, celebrities are ever on the news, for whatever reasons. To say the same for Elizabeth Taylor, however, would be the understatement of the year.
Starting off as a child actress, Taylor quickly gained fame, and by her teenage years, she was as famous as anyone could ever get.
In as much as her talent as an actress was unquestionable, it was her personal life that made headlines time and again.
For one, she got married eight times, and you know how the media jumps at love wrangles. Fueling the flames was the fact that some of her relationships started off as affairs, leading to huge scandals.
All the same, Elizabeth Taylor still remains a legend in the industry, and some even commend her for leading her life unfazed and in the best way she saw fit. The latest about her, however, has nothing to do with her love life – it is about a Rolls-Royce convertible she owned for almost twenty years. It is listed as among one of the items to be sold off at an auction early next month, courtesy of Guernsey’s.
After Taylor’s third husband Mike Todd passed away in a plane crash, the actress went on to date and marry Eddie Fisher in 1959, resulting in yet another scandal (Fisher left his wife and daughter for her).
A year into this marriage, Taylor purchased the Rolls-Royce. It turns out that she definitely loved it more than she loved Fisher, seeing as their marriage lasted a mere 5 years, while she had the ride with her for way longer.
Why wouldn’t she love it though? The actress had it custom-made to her specifications, the most noteworthy of which being that it had to be painted green, the color of her best outfit (she loved the dress so much she wore it to one of her weddings).
And you know how car enthusiasts have a name for their rides? Green Goddess was the name Taylor gave to her machine.
You obviously know that the Rolls-Royce company has its headquarters in London, right? However, Taylor wanted the American vibe while driving through the streets of New York, so she had the convertible assembled in American-specs.
She loved the facelift so much that she spent a little over a year driving this exact car. And when she headed out to Rome to film Cleopatra, guess what she did? She had Green Godden shipped out to Italy.
Unfortunately, this trip to Rome was the beginning of the end for Taylor’s marriage to Fisher. It was during the filming that the actress’ affair with Richard Burton (her co-star) began, and to make it worse, the actor was also married at the time. Taylor was in another scandal for the umpteenth time, and this time around the Vatican even weighed in.
Either way, Taylor’s relationship with her Green Goddess was still very much on, and Burton was also spotted running errands around NYC driving the car.
The three of them were a goldmine to the print media, and they appeared on magazine covers time and again. According to experts, the convertible could fetch up to $625,000 in the auction.
