Buying too early could mean missing out on a good deal but if you buy too late you could also be left with only exorbitant prices. That is so because predicting flight prices can be somehow difficult.
There have, however, been different predictions for the best time to purchase Thanksgiving tickets. With thanksgiving lurking around the corner, the Google Travel team has confirmed that this period is actually the perfect time to search for and purchase a flight for the Thanksgiving holiday.
The team stated that waiting till October to purchase the tickets will translate to parting with an additional 95%. Further stalling till November to purchase flight tickets or book your hotel will also attract an additional 30%. Thus, the Team noted that the latter days in August ( this period) and early September is the best period to get the choicest deals.
The team also highlighted that a lot of people avoid traveling the Wednesday that precedes Thanksgiving so as to avoid high costs and a heavy crowd. They, however, noted that even though it is likely the busiest day, it may not be the costliest.
Google’s flight’s product manager, Thjis van As indicated that travelers should endeavor to put other factors like the length of trips (given that trips that are shorter could cost more than those that are longer), and also the return date into consideration.
For those specifically traveling for Thanksgiving, the return date is a major determinant of how much they will spend on airfare. As such, those who are not in a hurry to get back to work have been advised to consider an extension of a trip, and this could help them save more.
If you want to travel back, the Monday after Thanksgiving is okay, Tuesday is relatively better and Wednesday comes in as the best. If you are in no hurry at all, you may stay till the week after Thanksgiving. However, for people who are lodging in a hotel, saving on a flight and spending twice on additional nights in a hotel room may not be a smart financial decision.
Google has also launched its Google flight features that can help travelers understand travel information that appears confusing. This will help them know which particular price is a good deal and which isn’t. This feature puts into consideration the amount that was paid on flights booked in 2017 across all the months to establish its insights.
The tool only highlights the flights that come in cheapest across all the airlines put the dates and destinations into consideration. Additionally, features such as checked bags and seat selection may attract extra cost based on the specific carrier. As such, even though the feature is quite helpful and can provide some insight, its utility in getting you the real deal is based largely on the standards as well as expectations of each individual traveler.
Hopper is an application that deals with monitoring price fluctuations and predictions of future airfare. According to the chief data scientist at Hopper, Patrick Surry, thanksgiving flight tickets in 2017 came in the cheapest sometime around mid-September. Hopper has predicted that between November 21 and November 25, the domestic flight tickets are at an average of about $358 for a round trip.
Hopper also noted that the prices are 8.5% more than what the price was in 2017.
Surry advises those traveling for Thanksgiving to endeavor to book their flights before October 31st because the prices after that date will get higher. Surry added that waiting till the early days of November, it will cost about 2 dollars for each day of waiting and for the two weeks preceding Thanksgiving, it will begin to cost addition 5 dollars daily.
Surry further recommended that people should be strategic about choosing departure dates so as to get good deals. He added that Wednesday, November 21st is the most expensive day to book a ticket.
